We're recycling soft plastic into wheelie bin lids
Council and CAWRA have been working with Soft Plastic Stewardship Australia to offer kerbside collection of soft plastic for recycling to over 5,000 households across the Cities of Adelaide, Charles Sturt and Port Adelaide.
With the help of a grant from Green Industries SA, we are also working with local bin manufacturers Mastec to test the use of recycled soft plastic in new wheelie bin lids.
We've made some prototype lids and are now ready to test them in use.
Our residents are very supportive of soft plastic recycling, but recycling only works if we also buy back products made from recycled goods.
At the moment, we are buying back our recycled soft plastic as recycled road asphalt.
We would like to expand this to include other options for this material as the soft plastic recycling industry continues to grow and expand.
The 2 Councils have identified some streets that are suitable to be part of the trial.
If your street has been nominated and selected to be part of the trial, you will receive a letter in May providing more details about the trial and letting you know when to place your waste bin (which currently has a blue lid) out on the kerb so we can fit the new recycled lid.
If selected, you will receive a letter in May telling you which day to place your rubbish bin on the kerb. We will do this on your usual waste bin collection day.
We will visit your bin during the day to fit the new recycled lid. You can then bring your bin back in and start using it as normal.
The new lids are made of 20% recycled soft plastic material, with the remaining 80% being a mix of virgin plastic and the red dye colour.
No. Just keep using and placing your bin out for collection as you normally would.
Red - replacing your old blue lid.
We will assess the recycled lids in 6 months' time to see whether they have held their shape and colour while in use.
Households participating in the recycled bin lid trial will all be provided with a starter pack of 20 special orange bags that can be used to recycled soft plastic from home. More information on that program is on our website here.
If you'd prefer not to trial the new lids, don't place your bin out for collection on the day nominated in the letter we send you in May.
